Stops : Sacsamarca – Mine of Santa Bárbara – Mirador
Duratión: 1/2 Day
The Sacsamarca town:
This welcoming community has huge stone formations where you can practice adventure sports. The architecture of the village is a wonder because of its typical and pictures stone houses with red tiled roofs.
Situated at 3,876m altitude, 3.5 km from Huancavelica, it was once the location of Native tributes to the Spanish crown: the natives, in accordance to the myths of the mine, would extract mercury, or “llimpi,” in Quechua.
History of the Mine of Santa Bárbara:
For people who come to visit Huancavelica, a walk to the Mina de la Muerte (Mine of the Dead Woman) is essential. The name given at this Mine is due to the forced and inhuman work to which Indians were subjugated in the area.
It was one of the most important mines of the world during the colonial period. Santa Bárbara was considered as “the precious jewel of the Spanish Crown” due to its extreme economical importance for Spain at these times. This importance was linked to the fact that the Mercury was then the raw material for silver casting and production.
We can still find marks of the old colonial settlements: for example, there is a shield of the Spanish Crown engraved in the main entrance stone. Likewise, the columns and stones of red colour Santa Bárbara’s church call ones attention.
The visit finishes by a walk to the View Point “Mirador”. From this point, you will be able to appreciate a breathtaking panorama of the city of Huancavelica.
